Pegasystems' VP Advances the Case for Rules-based BPM in 2004 Workflow Handbook

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 19, 2004 — Pegasystems Inc.'s (NASDAQ: PEGA) vice president of Business Process Management, Setrag Khoshafian, has written a key chapter on the relationship between rules-based systems, business process management, and Web Services for the Workflow Management Coalition's recently published 2004 Workflow Handbook.

Khoshafian is among an elite group of contributors to the book, along with technologists from Hewlett Packard, IBM, Fujitsu, and the University of California at Berkeley. In his chapter, "Web Services Orchestration and Management Through Intelligent BPM," he makes the case that rules-based platforms for business process management (BPM) systems employing Web services are the best way to give business people more control over IT systems running crucial business processes.

"Rules give rise to intelligent Web services and BPM systems," Khoshafian writes. "In terms of the underlying framework, a single rules-based BPM engine is the only option that guarantees the required efficiency, consistency, maintenance and migration for agile, service-oriented enterprises."

Dr. Khoshafian has more than 10 years of hands-on experience designing and implementing enterprise BPM systems. Before joining Pegasystems in 2003, he served as senior vice president of technology for Savvion. He is the lead author of eight books on a wide variety of technologies, and has taught graduate and undergraduate technology courses at various universities. He holds masters and doctoral degrees in computer science from the University of Wisconsin.

Pegasystems is a leading provider of smart, rules-based business process management (BPM) software. The company recently released its PegaRULES Process Commander Version 4 smart BPM platform, which combines business rules and business process management, including robust system integration, localization and business activity monitoring (BAM) capabilities — all capable of running in a distributed, heterogeneous environment.

"The Workflow Management Coalition is an exceptional forum for discussing the importance of rules, because workflow is the foundation for so many of the key processes in corporate IT," said Pegasystems CEO Alan Trefler. "Setrag's chapter draws the crucial line connecting rules, BPM and Web services into the unified whole that lets IT systems evolve into the genuine business drivers they can, and should, be."
