State of Maine Selects Pegasystems for Transformational Program

Pega used to deploy new services and help drive greater productivity and operational efficiencies

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Jan. 13, 2014 – Pegasystems Inc. (NASDAQ: PEGA), the leader in Business Process Management (BPM), and a leading provider of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solutions, today announced that the State of Maine has selected Pegasystems as their transformational platform to help improve operations and deliver new services.  The State of Maine will leverage Pega technology to enable accelerated deployment and scale to help meet growing demand for services and benefits.

The State of Maine is deploying Pega to help reduce the time to successfully resolve blocked unemployment claims and help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. The new omni-channel program is designed to accept unemployment claims via the state’s call center or online via a self-service portal. Payment on claims is often delayed due to missing wages, wrong wage details, no employer account information, and more.  Currently, the state’s unemployment staff is required to execute a number of time consuming and error prone manual processes in order to pay a claim. The Pega solution provides the State of Maine automation that will help to improve the ability to correct these issues automatically and to improve the user experience and efficiency.

Key to Maine’s decision to deploy Pega was the ability to deploy via a secure and reliable cloud platform including the ability to easily and safely move applications and/or data to and from the cloud while helping to maintain security, privacy, regulatory and compliance requirements. Pega also proved a more effective way to modernize and leverage aging legacy systems than packaged applications or manual coding.

As a recognized industry leader, Pega is helping to drive successful modernization across International, Federal, State and Local government agencies such as the Australia’s New South Wales-Transport Management Centre, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the California Franchise Tax Board, and the Texas County & District Retirement System.

In response to growing demands for Pega products in the public sector, Pegasystems opened a new office in the Washington, D.C. area and recently expanded its leadership team for the public sector. Government industry IT veteran Thom Rubel has joined Pega as public sector business line leader.  Thom brings a wealth of experience and understanding in the government IT industry, including federal agency executive level business experience, depth in state government information technology policy, and global government advisory services having served as:

  • Vice President for Government at industry analyst firms, IDC and Meta Group;
  • Director of State Information Technology Programs for the National Governors Association; and
  • Multiple management roles across Federal Government, including as an Assistant Under Secretary at the Department of Agriculture and Deputy Director of Consumer Affairs at  the Department of Transportation.

For many years Thom has been tracking, reporting, and presenting global public sector trends and market research and has become a trusted advisor to government organizations around the world.

“Our goal is to create a state organization that operates more closely along the lines of successful, private organizations that efficiently manage complex operations and support multiple audiences across multiple locations and multiple communication channels,” said Doug Averill, Director of Business Process Management for the State of Maine. “No matter how our customers need to contact us, we are building a seamless, unified system that will enable that to happen. Pega’s Build for Change® Government platform is the foundation of that system as we continue to improve customer service and increase operational efficiencies across the state.”

“Using Pega, Maine has launched a significant program that will enable the State to rapidly respond to new policy and legislative changes, while driving operational efficiencies.  Maine is setting an example for other state agencies by adopting and implementing the best practices of successful private sector organizations,” said Thom Rubel, Business Line Leader, Public Sector, Pegasystems. “Today it’s all about productivity and service in public sector organizations, and Pega offers robust solutions that help public sector organizations achieve both.  Forward-looking agencies are implementing Pega because they realize that productivity improvements are key to long-sought mutual goals of more efficient and effective government.”
