Your best digital transformation strategy: A low-code platform for pro developers, citizen developers, and everyone in between

We’ve learned over the past year that digital transformation is critical for the survival of most businesses, and the rate of transformation is only accelerating. CEOs, CIOs, and IT leaders are making critical investments to keep pace with new and emerging digital technologies that not only capture and make better use of data but also optimize processes and provide easy, intuitive user experiences for customers and employees. Low-code solutions are an important component of this overall strategy to modernize enterprise architecture.

But while low-code capabilities can help empower citizen developers to more quickly build or modify processes, there’s a disconnect with professional front-end developers. They are often left with the challenge and time sink of how to plug that new process into the existing user interface. Many times, the resulting UI is not only inelegant but inefficient.

That’s why we’ve updated Pega’s low-code platform to help developers at all levels build and modify apps that streamline work, look great, and perform exceptionally. You can see the newest features in this PegaWorld iNspire keynote, and dive deeper into the new UX capabilities in this session replay.

Take a full-spectrum approach to low-code development and experiences

Because digital transformations come in all sizes, low-code app dev platforms should include best practices to support interoperability, usability, consistency, and governance, whether you are building a simple application or one that is infinitely more complex. Until now, however, no platform has combined it all with a truly model-based interface that allowed business users to quickly build out back-end processes and provided front-end developers with the capabilities to extend their UI just as quickly and simply.

And that was a problem. Businesses that benefit from the agility citizen developers provide did not want to add a layer of complexity that would prevent their ability to quickly react to market needs. But they also saw the challenges end-users faced when the UI design was inconsistent. Even a small detail like how many times a user has to click to get to an intended outcome can affect a customer’s perception of your brand!

Pega’s updated low-code platform takes a full-spectrum approach to application development and is the first enterprise-grade, low-code UX solution. With a modern UI architecture and enhanced orchestration engine powering Pega’s popular and easy-to-use authoring and modeling tools, both citizen and pro developers gain more capabilities to build UI and components that just work across devices. Pro developers are still free to leverage existing frameworks with built-in best practices based on industry standards like React, while Pega's new Constellation design system plus an updated DX API make it easier to connect with existing front ends and build sleek user interfaces. And single page application (SPA) technology helps the UI perform 3x faster for small projects, enterprise-scale projects, and everything in between.

Low code is helping clients speed small- and large-scale digital transformations

At PegaWorld iNspire 2021 we heard from two very different clients how low code is helping them achieve their digital transformation goals.

During a year when biopharmaceutical organizations were under pressure to develop and distribute critical medications and therapies quickly and safely, Pfizer used Pega’s low-code automation platform to rebuild a slow, siloed, legacy system crucial for managing the development pipeline of new drugs. They designed a modern user interface that connected with various data sources on the back end but provided an intuitive user experience on the front end – and is outperforming every goal.

Deutsche Bahn had a similar challenge with legacy systems and modernizing the thousands of smaller processes that make up those systems. Their path to digitalization includes empowering citizen developers to update processes using Pega’s low-code factory approach. With guidance and integrated governance for uniting the right tools, processes, and people on a common, low-code platform, Deutsche Bahn is empowering users and ensuring innovation in a repeatable, scalable, and governed fashion.

From small and quick changes to large-scale, mission-critical transformations, both citizen and professional developers are taking advantage of low-code platforms to digitalize and streamline processes into elegant, end-to-end digital experiences.
