AI ROI

AI ROI starts when your agents can see how work really happens

Imagine hiring a brilliant new employee and blindfolding them on day one. That’s how most enterprises deploy AI agents today.

Agents decide without seeing the process

AI agents are good at executing whatever task sits in front of them. What most deployments are missing is process intelligence, a live view of how work actually flows. An agent can’t tell you why one loan clears in six days while a nearly identical one takes 26. It doesn’t know that a third of your cases keep cycling back through a document step that should run once. Nobody gave it that information, so it decides without it, and the return on your AI spend shrinks accordingly.

Dashboards find problems after you’ve paid for them

Most organizations already collect the data that would catch this. It usually ends up in dashboards and quarterly reviews, which means someone looks at it weeks or months after the damage started. Then a team still has to agree on a fix and ship it. On a good day that takes a quarter.

Here are the numbers from one real loan origination process. Out of 17,436 cases, 30% needed rework. The biggest single cause was a document collection loop that trapped 17% of all cases and added roughly 20 days to each one. None of this was hidden. The evidence sat in the event logs the whole time. The people working those loans had no way to see it.

A smartwatch for your AI agents

Pega Process and Task Mining shows how work actually gets done. Process Mining reads event logs from enterprise systems and maps how processes really run. Task Mining records desktop activity, which catches the manual workarounds that never reach a system log. Gartner named Pega a Leader in its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Process Intelligence Platforms.

The new part is who can use that intelligence. Through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an agent queries it live, in the middle of handling a case. It works like a smartwatch reading your heart rate mid-run: live measurements, delivered while there’s still time to do something about them. An agent handling a loan can pull up the stall patterns from similar cases and reroute before the same thing happens again.

Most process mining tools stop at the insight. Pega Process and Task Mining connects the findings to Pega Blueprint, which redesigns the workflow and pushes the change into execution. The gap between knowing about a problem and fixing it shrinks from months to hours.

Three takeaways for leaders

  • Context is the bottleneck. Your agents already reason well. What they’re missing is visibility into how work flows, and that’s where the next round of AI ROI comes from.
  • Process intelligence becomes operational infrastructure. It moves out of quarterly reviews and into the live decision path of every agent.
  • The closed loop is the advantage. Process Mining finds the issues, agents act on them, and Pega Blueprint redesigns the workflow. A tool that stops at the dashboard can only tell you what already went wrong.

From doing tasks to improving work

Most AI systems execute tasks. Improving the process itself is rarer, and it’s the part that compounds. An agent that can see how work happens learns something from every case it touches. If you’re deciding where the next AI dollar goes, give the agents you already have a way to see the process they work in.
