Recently, Pegasystems polled companies of all sizes across a variety of industries to identify key trends and insights around their mobility projects. We looked at mobile investments, factors for technology selection, key frustrations, and more. Working through Vanson Bourne, a leading market research firm, Pega polled 1,000 IT and business decision makers from the US and UK1 to understand how enterprises are using mobile now and what they see in the future. Some of the key findings include:

  • The popularity of mobile continues to grow exponentially across the enterprise, increasing the complexity of managing the applications, technology, vendors, and so forth required to deploy a mobile project.
  • The average enterprise has spent more than a half million dollars for mobile initiatives in the last 2-18 months with plans to spend another half million in the coming 12-18 months.
  • Most mobile projects focus on current business processes with 67% of respondents indicating all or most mobile projects are for current processes.
  • The most frequently cited “pains” for delivering mobile applications are cost, ranked at 48%, followed by development speed (43%), security (39%) and integration (36%).ƒ
  • A key driver of cost is mobile apps that were not designed to last. More than 1 in 3 companies have retired a significant portion of their mobile apps. Nearly a quarter of enterprises are currently re-writing or planning to re-write the majority of their mobile apps.ƒ
  • For 39% of respondents the average development cycle is roughly 3-6 months, with 27% reporting timeframes of 6-8 months. Enterprises are looking to reduce development time and costs with nearly 30% of respondents saying their development costs were over budget.ƒ
  • Respondents identified a key driver of costs and development times as integration with back-end systems. Sixty-five percent of respondents said they underestimated the complexity and/or time needed for backend integration.

Mobile cloud services – often called mobile backend-as-a-service (mBaaS) – are becoming increasingly popular among developers and architects. Providing prepackaged, ready-to-use services, including capabilities such as integration, authentication, location/mapping, and notifications bundles, mobile cloud services offer a flexible solution that reduces development time, deployment costs, and the complexity associated with mobile enterprise apps.
