The individual “recruit” who enters bootcamp or military academy as “raw material” is molded, smelted, and comes out as a service member. Forever bonded by shared experiences, sacrifices and knowledge, each person is now part of a team that embodies the phrase: “We are better together than we are alone.”
With a “People First. Mission Always.” attitude, service members endeavor to serve with integrity and honor. Much of what we see in the way corporate management and leadership is practiced today has evolved from the military. There are thousands of books on leadership and management styles; the vast majority of them have been influenced by methods and practices with a military origin. It is no great mystery that the process by which teams are trained, managed, and led will have the greatest influence on their collective success or failure on any given mission.
The rigorous training endured during bootcamp creates new habits in everything from daily physical exercise to controlling one’s mindset while under stress. These new habits become the process by which individuals and teams function and operate to achieve an objective. Whether on the battlefield, in the mess hall, on the factory floor, building software, or delivering meals to Medicare recipients, the corporate term, “Done-Done” has become synonymous “Mission Accomplished.” In every case, the process and its execution are the key drivers of success.
Being in the military is not a job, it is a way of life
Applying these key drivers of success at Pega
The primary process developed at Pega to achieve client success employs a series of microjourneys with agreed upon outcomes at each stage, with the result being “Done-Done.” This is one of the characteristics that distinguishes Pega from our competition. Pega’s process, like many of the processes used in the military, begins with the end in focus, to break down the final objective into smaller objectives, each with its own definition of “Done-Done.” Pega’s process, and how we execute, are why Pega continues to be the market leader.
November is Veterans Awareness Month at Pega. Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are vital parts of Pega’s core fabric and Veterans@Pega is a growing employee resource group (ERG) with global representation. The contributions made by veterans at Pega are critical to Pega’s success. We come from all corners of the globe; we are diverse even within our diversity; and we share a common bond with everyone at Pega: We want to help clients use our AI-powered decisioning and workflow automation to solve their most pressing business challenges and help them meet today’s customer demands while continuously transforming for tomorrow.
