Pega’s growth and success over the past 36 years is attributed to our team of smart, innovative, unique, and talented staff. We love the passion they bring to their individual jobs each and every day, and are thrilled when we get to brag about their accomplishments!
That’s why we’re proud to introduce you to Snehlata, a senior solutions engineer in our Hyderabad office, and the 2018 TechGig Geek Goddess Individual Coding Champion. The contest, which is exclusive to women in technology, is extremely competitive and a very big deal. Taking place over a 95-day period, Snehlata bested more than 68,000 female technologists to earn national recognition as a top female coder, plus take home a cash prize, merit certificate, and of course, the winner’s trophy.
We wanted to learn more about Snehlata’s background, her #LifeAtPega, and what drives her to be the best.
Background and competition
Can you describe the work you currently do at Pega?
I am a Pega developer currently working on Financial Services software. Specifically, I am working on performance enhancement of the Know Your Customer Engine and other modules.
What motivated you to participate in the TechGig Geek Goddess competition?
I am an enthusiastic, passionate coder and am always keen to participate and meet new coders, which invoked me to look for coding competitions. Geek Goddess was a national level opportunity which I came across that is exclusively for women coders. This gave me a chance to engage with top female leaders in technology.
What was the most challenging part of the competition?
The finale was challenging, as it was a live event with two problem statements to be completed in 5 hours. The fastest solver with the best total score only would win the title of Geek Goddess. Having multiple parameters like time, pressure, and problem solving skill in a live event was a challenge.
What is the most memorable part of the competition / what did you like most about it?
The opportunity to meet top women leaders across different industries – like Ira Singhal (Indian Administrative Service Officer and the top ranked individual in the Civil Services Examination in 2014), Ruchika Mann Baweja (Vice President & Head of Technology, Member of Board of Directors, American Express India), and Shubha Iyer (Managing Director, Goldman Sachs) – inspired me to push my limits further.
How did Pega support you in the competition?
As I stated, I am always keen on updating my coding skills, which made me take time for attending such events. I had to take time off on weekdays to accommodate my personal passion, and my team supported work in my absence.
Perspectives on working at Pega
What do you like about Pega technology, in general?
I really love our tagline Build for Change®. Typically, software is delivered fitted and finished for the customer, who can’t further modify it easily. What I love about Pega software is you can always keep customizing.
How does your work at Pega impact others (clients, co-workers, or beyond)?
I am generally referred to as an influencing personality. I always make sure everyone is happy and help foster a friendly development environment.
How have you grown at Pega?
I started my career at Pega as non-Pega developer and completed my Certified System Architect exam in two weeks. With prior experience and Pega training I started building modules and successfully delivered several releases.
What motivates you in your career?
I get motivated by solving complex technical challenges. I love collaborating and accomplishing big things as a part of a team, and that’s what drives me to do my best each day.
How has Pega supported your development / advancement / success?
As a product company, Pega gave me opportunity to think out-of-the-box. New ideas and innovations are always welcomed here.
Advice for future Geek Goddesses
What advice would you give to young women who are just starting out in tech or are thinking about working in the software industry?
Any journey is not easy, it takes a lot of hard work to achieve your goal. It’s all about believing in yourself and not giving up. All the best to all the goddesses across the industry. Keep up your hard work.
Is there anything else you’d liked to add?
No matter how talented you are, approaching a competition as intensive and popular as TechGig Geek Goddess requires serious practice, and that’s exactly what I did. Start practicing!
Yes I am a girl.
Yes I am a coder.
