Business Process Management and Six Sigma Complementary Methodologies

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 26 — The Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) is examined as an ideal platform for implementing Six Sigma projects by Dr. Setrag Khoshafian, vice president, BPM Technology, Pegasystems (Nasdaq: PEGA) in his contribution to one of the industry's top forums for new ideas, the 2006 Workflow Handbook.

Khoshafian focuses on Six Sigma and BPMS as complementary rather than competing methodologies highlighting some of their similarities such as demand for continuous improvement, process focus and an iterative nature. Khoshafian's chapter entitled "Business Process Management for Six Sigma Projects" also discusses the evolution of the BPMS from human-centric workflow to today's comprehensive business process management suite, which unifies process automation and business rules.

"It is not an accident that BPM is increasingly becoming an ideal platform for implementing successful Six Sigma projects. It has to do with maturity," Khoshafian writes. "BPMSs have evolved significantly over the past few decades. The core capabilities of BPMS, including support for business rules, integration, reporting, piloting and activity monitoring, are critical to Six Sigma."

One of BPM's early pioneers, Khoshafian is the author of several books on computing and business process management. At Pegasystems, Dr. Khoshafian is responsible for leading product direction and BPM technology strategy, and is also involved in numerous technology, marketing, alliance and customer initiatives. In the past 15 years he has been involved in the invention, design and implementation of several advanced BPM products. In addition to BPM, he is a noted expert on SOA, object-orientation, and database technologies.

The handbook, which offers three sections — including the "World of Workflow and BPM," "Standards," and "Directory and Appendices" — is available for $95.00 from the Workflow Management Coalition (WfMC) at
