The Business Issue
For Alere Health, the merger of multiple companies resulted in multiple disconnected clinical platforms that prevented a unified view of participants in its health and wellness solutions. These disconnected systems thwarted personal care management and only allowed for batch processing, making it difficult to achieve real-time case management and deliver participant-centered diagnostic and health management services.
The Solution
Alere turned to Pegasystems to power Apollo, a new clinical platform that combines a patient-centric, personalized portal with medical and pharmacy claims to create a comprehensive, holistic view of each participant. With Pega and Apollo, Alere Health has been able to enhance its operations at all levels as participants are now treated holistically, the company’s nursing staff has a comprehensive view into each participant’s medical history and physicians experience a more consistent approach to care plans for Alere Health’s members.
The Results
- While an internal project would have taken 32 person-months, a team of business users and subject matter experts designed and implemented Apollo in just 9 months using Pega.
- New customers can be enrolled in as little as 90 days, which represents a dramatic reduction in the time compared to pre-Apollo enrollment.
- The comprehensive view of a participant’ health history and automatically triggered care alerts help Alere Health nurses increase the efficiency of interactions, create customized care plans for a participant in real time and take advantage of ‘teachable” moments to influence behavior and outcomes.
- Care plans are now consistent and can be easily modified, ensuring care meets evidence-based guidelines and protocols.
The Future
Alere Health expects to develop more integration between its systems, such as in-house care management programs and customer service and add support for multiple languages. The company also plans to allow large employers to customize the portal's presentation, dynamically presented screens and workflow to meet unique needs. Pega’s business-focused technology will make it easy for Alere Health's customers to make these changes without involving technical resources from either Pega or Alere Health.
