Grupo Financiero BBVA Bancomer is no newcomer to Mexico's banking scene. The bank, one of the country's largest (along with Grupo Financiero Santander Serfin and Citigroup's Banamex), was formed by the 2000 merger of the nearly 70-year-old Grupo Financiero Bancomer with BBVA-Probursa (a subsidiary of Spain's Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, or BBVA). Bancomer offers retail and commercial banking, as well as mutual and pension funds, asset management, insurance, securities trading, and other financial services through more than 1,700 branches across Mexico. It also performs investment and government banking services.
